Baltimore Cultivates Food Deserts for Healthier Options (WBAL)

BALTIMORE —With 750 corner and convenience stores and 45 supermarkets, Baltimore City is still full of food deserts. Food deserts are an area where the distance to a supermarket is more than a quarter of a mile away and more than 30 percent of households have no available vehicle.

 

 

With a new federal law and some hard work by the Baltimore City Health Department, that's about to change.

Public comment on the 2014 Farm Bill is closing soon. That bill is requiring food retailers to take stock of what they sell if they want to continue to be authorized to accept Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in their stores. A change that is already taking place at some 18 corner stores in the city.
